VO₂ MAX TESTING

Measure your capacity. Optimize your Longevity.

VO₂ max measures how effectively your heart, lungs, and muscles use oxygen during exercise. It is one of the most important indicators of cardiovascular fitness and long-term health.

At Peak, it is measured directly, breath by breath—not estimated by a watch.

VO₂ Max & Resting Metabolic Rate

The number that predicts how long you'll live.

VO₂ max — the maximum volume of oxygen your body can use during exercise — is the single strongest predictor of all-cause mortality after age 40. Each one-MET improvement in cardiorespiratory fitness is associated with roughly a 13% reduction in all-cause mortality risk. We measure it directly, breath by breath — not estimated from a wearable.

VO₂ Max • measured directly • ~20 min test

RMR • indirect calorimetry • 10–15 min

WHY VO₂ MAX?

Your fitness, measured.

Your results show:

Whether you are training for performance or protecting your independence later in life, VO₂ max shows where you stand and where to focus next.

RESTING METABOLIC RATE

Your metabolism, measured.

RMR testing measures how many calories your body uses at rest. It provides a more individualized starting point for nutrition than an online calculator or standard formula.

Use it to set smarter targets for fat loss, weight maintenance, or building lean mass.

What We Measure

Two tests. One metabolic picture.

Group A

VO₂ Max

Four numbers, measured breath by breath during a graded exercise test.
Group B

Resting Metabolic Rate

Four numbers, measured at rest by indirect calorimetry.
WHAT TO EXPECT

Simple from start to finish.

Measure
Complete your VO₂ max test on a treadmill or bike and your RMR test while resting comfortably.
Understand
We explain your results during the same visit, including what they mean for your fitness and metabolism.
Apply
Use your numbers to make more informed decisions about training, nutrition, and long-term health.

Interpretation

A printout is not a plan.

Any lab can hand you a number. The value is in what gets prescribed off the back of it.

The result is read against your percentile, your history, and the rest of your panel — then a target is set, and the training that reaches it. In practice that usually means a specific weekly volume at low intensity, a smaller dose of harder work, and a retest date. Zones come from your measured response, so the prescription is specific to your physiology rather than a category you were sorted into.

RMR does separate work. It sets the floor on any deficit we prescribe, which is how we avoid the pattern that undoes most weight loss — cutting calories far enough that the body gives up lean tissue alongside fat. Paired with a DEXA scan, we can see whether what you are losing is the thing you wanted to lose.

VO₂ max is System 2 of the Peak Longevity Six. It is measured alongside the other five, because a strong number here does not compensate for a weak one elsewhere.

Retest cadence

We do not test more often than quarterly unless there is a clinical reason to — the biology does not move fast enough for it to tell you anything.
